How to be successful at...

Hey everybody, there's been a lot going on since the last update and I'm still buried in work with the short film but everything is coming along very nicely. Let's get to it.

Fun film stuff

Alright so 'Quiet' is coming out great. Last week I had keyframed more than half of the film. There are four scenes all together and right now I'm about halfway through keyframing the third scene. The great thing about this film is that I'm doing the keyframes and animation super clean. Since all the drawings are very clean, that gives me the opportunity to bypass the cleaning or 'inking' phase of the animation. This doesn't necessarily make the production go faster per se, because I have to be more conscious of what I want the keys to be. I wanted to try something new as I was animating this film and I definitely prefer to the way I used to animate-which was very quick and sloppy. The old way was also difficult for me because I had to reinterpret a lot of the lines I laid down previously which always turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated.

Example of keyframes for the uninitiated.

The other great thing about this film is that I am probably going to have it animated on 3's or 4's when I get to the in-betweening phase.  A lot of my older animations were done on 2's and while it always looked nice and smooth, it can be very time consuming. I also wanted to see if I could make my animation work on 3's and 4's. This wasn't something I was accustomed to doing and I wanted to use my time with this film to really break old habits I formed when I went to college. Overall I'm satisfied with how the film is turning out and I will still have a dedicated blog that dives into every part of the film in April. Be on the lookout!

Wicked website stuff

The website redesign has gone well too. I'm very proud of what I've been able to fit into the design and I can't wait to talk about it when it launches. A lot of work went into forming the design and now I can start to make the assets for the website. This is the most exciting thing for me because the website redesign is everything I originally wanted this website to be.  I will also have a dedicated blog discussing how I went about crafting the new website.

One more thing...

Last year I announced that I will be making a web-series. Well, finally I can reveal it. I will be making an animated series out of my 'How to be successful...' comics.

Oh yeah!  I'm very excited with this because it means I can have comics running right beside the animations. The reason why I decided to turn this into an animated series is because I feel that some jokes work better with time than as a single panel. Animation also opens up a whole new dimension for the series and will expose this world to a whole new audience. The animations are a gateway to expanding the universe and it's something I've been very excited about.

There's a whole lot of stuff you're gonna learn how to be successful at!

Next I can say that the animations will be very short, starting off at least. I have no plans to make animations as elaborate as 'Quiet' out of these (you'll learn why soon). These animations will be small 30 second- 1 minute shorts. They are mini, bite sized films that will take the character to new and unexpected places. I will also try to drop at least one of these films every 3-4 months. It's hard to say for sure what the schedule will be at the moment because I'm in a transitional period of my life, but I am trying to make that a goal for this series.

Lastly, the animations will premiere first on this website, than it will go on Youtube and Vimeo. I don't know for how long the episodes will stay on here before being put up on the other sites, but it will at least be a 1-2 week difference. The reason, like I said in a previous post, is to bring great traffic to THIS website and to have people come here to experience my art. I will start working on the series after 'Quiet' has been finished, sometime within the next 3-4 weeks. Oh and the first episode will premiere in the Summer. Please look forward to it! There will be more information about the 'How to be successful' web series in the coming weeks.

Last but not least

Here is a page out of my sketchbook with some character doodles for 'Quiet'. You may have noticed some in similar doodles in previous blogs, but now you can see a bit more of the context. Enjoy!
