Kyle’s new dreamspace + Quiet launch

Hello, everybody! It's Kyle and I'm glad to be back. It's been a very long and eventful month. There's a lot to talk about so let's get started.

New dreams

So the first thing you may have noticed, if you're a frequent visitor of my website is that there is a massive redesign. I'm talking meteor-hitting-the-earth-and-wiping-out-life-on-the planet sized redesign. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time now, about when I finished up my book. I started working on the layout in January and tweaking things since then. One of the reasons I took such a long break was because I wanted to give myself time to really get the design right without the pressures of finishing my short film.

One of the things I'm sure you've noticed is the new logo. Or maybe I should say the new and sexy logo.

This redesign is so big that I've had to split it up into at least two phases. What you're seeing is the brunt of phase one. There's some missing pages I will add as time goes on, but the major point of this phase is to set the foundation of the new website up. This phase also includes:

  • Visual redesign of the website
  • New pages and organizational hierarchy
  • Site map page
  • New store pages
  • Exclusive content
  • Donations
  • and more.

The next phase will introduce email messages with news, updates and deals on the website, advertising and pages explaining how to get your ads on my website, and some other stuff to round everything out. This phase is very exciting for me as it is the first step to really start monetizing my website. I know that may sound weird, but making art and entertainment is very, very expensive on my end. Not just from a financial point of view but it's also very physically and mentally exhausting. I love doing it and want to continue to do it, but I am not convinced I should be a starving artist in doing so.

Anyway, the main focus of this redesign is to make surfing this website enjoyable. I know that may sound weird- it's just a webpage; however, I feel that if I can make the browsing fun and streamlined, newcomers and veterans will spend a lot more time here and will want to come back to see what's new. I put up a lot of different types of content, and I feel this website and it's new design is the best way to experience it.

This redesign will usher in a new beginning for the website. There's so much more to talk about when it comes to the website. The next blog will discuss in more detail the website and where I plan to take it in the future.

It finally happened. After about 5-6 months of work, my short film 'Quiet' is finally available for you to see!

It's finally here!

The film was finished early may, I believe either the first or second week. It's kind of a blur to me as I did a huge power push from April until completion. It was a very intense time actually. Since the completion, I have been submitting the short to a lot of film festivals. So far I've only been able to do mostly ones that are free or have a low cost of entry. I hope to continue submitting throughout the year when I accumulate some more income. Once I get notification of the festivals it was accepted at, I'll put it up in a blog and hopefully if you're near a festival that's playing it, you can view it on the big screen!

While the short film may appear on festivals outside of this website in real life (irl for the uninitiated), the only place you can watch 'Quiet' online is on this website. As I've said before, this is to create an incentive for people to come here and explore what I have to offer as an artist. There is no time frame in my mind where website exclusive shorts will be put on other websites. That said, there will be content that will be put up on sites like vimeo and youtube, but they'll mostly be more limited types of animation.

Dreamspace exclusive content will come with it's own intro bumper

I'm also very pleased with the outcome of the film. I had bought a lot of hardware over the past couple of years and by the time I finished production on 'Quiet' I had used everything I purchased. In other words my room is now officially a studio (YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH). It's been a long time coming, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

I have also accomplished most of everything that I set out to do on this film. I wanted to make a short film under five minutes with no color that focused on telling a simple story with nice animation, which I felt I accomplished. The major drawback of making the film was that it went on far longer than I expected. I wanted the film to be done around the end of March, but due to the style of the line work and not roughing out the animation, it took a lot longer to finish. I don't usually underestimate the time it takes to produce something, but there was a lot to consider with this film that I didn't, but I'm confident I'll be on the mark the next time.

This film was also a massive learning experience. I mean really massive. I have never animated by hand in a digital program (to this extent) before. By doing so, I've become a lot more confident in digital animation and understanding of its strengths and limitations. I'm very excited for my next project as I believe the lessons I've learned from this one will lead to a quicker turnaround for the next one.

Lastly, please, please share this with your friends and family! Word of mouth is pretty much the lifeblood of what I'm doing. Every share, like and moment you tell somebody about this website or this film helps. It really does. If you do like what you see here, please show your appreciation by sharing this with people you know or believe will like it like you did.

Sharing is caring!

Other notes

Quiet is only the beginning. I have A LOT more animation to follow, and a few more films for this year. The next project is to bring my comic series 'How to be Successful' to life with animation. The cartoon series should be out later this summer. Please look forward to it. There are also many, many more big changes coming as well, so please continue to stop by and see what's new!

Lastly, since the beginning of May, I've been sick. Due to the length of time of my sickness, I don't think there will be any illustration updates for June. I'm still sick and I hope to get better soon (I've never been this sick for such a long period), so please be patient!
