Production Diary 8 - Some Templates
Plan To Succeed
The pre-production process is probably one of the most important parts of the overall short film process. Many people just speed through it to get content out, and that has its strengths but I’ve always been the type to want to map things out first, to make things go quicker later (and it leads to more consistency as well).
When I started making these shorts a few years ago, I spent some time getting the things I wanted to focus on in place, so that production could be seamless and that my artistic voice would be consistent. Some of these templates have gone through several iterations as well, but I’ll only be showing the latest versions here. Here’s a short description of the templates:
Square storyboard template with details. Includes quick info on shot type. Also contains radial check boxes to notate camera angle and action, transition type, level of animation and background detail.
Character design sheet. A quick guide on the general style of characters, environment, vehicles and animals
Storyboard key. Used for helping with transition types, animation and background detail and panel shots (for the comic look)
